Why use copper lattice earth mats? Well, there are situations when using a standard earth rod is difficult. It may be that the soil is compacted and it is not easy to utilise standard grounding connections. In such circumstances, it may be more effective to use a copper lattice earth mat.
For instance, in a situation where there is a transmission tower, and there is a fault in the tower ground, the ground potential may increase and this can be dangerous to people in the vicinity in two ways. Firstly, a circumstance might occur whereby there is a voltage gradient across the ground due to the resistivity of the soil. The potential difference between the placement of a person’s two feet is referred to as the ‘step potential’ and can result in a flow of current through the person’s body.
Secondly, if there is a physical connection between a person and a tower, where there is high resistance between the tower and the soil, a significant current may flow through the person. In either circumstance, the person might be fatally wounded. The placing of a copper lattice earth mat can reduce the resistivity of the soil and minimise the chances of fault current causing injury to persons in the vicinity.
