In many cases, the products were manufacture for renewable energy companies can come from our standard ranges of terminals and earthing equipment. However, we are increasingly being asked to design bespoke components - custom terminals, earth bars, busbars and earth mats - to enable installation of these vital projects in a wide variety of locations - including the use of chemically-resistant materials for the more challenging installation environments.
Renewables Case Study
We were approached to design an earth bar complete with weld bosses for wind turbines located in an offshore wind farm. The marine environment meant that there were always going to be issues relating to corrosion, so the design had to incorporate appropriate material considerations.
The site for the earth bars was the wind turbine gantry/gate on the access platform and it was anticipated that the best solution for mounting the earth bar was to include stainless steel bosses, which would be welded to custom-made weld brackets.The main body of the earth bar was tin-plated copper and to compensate for the marine environment, the studs and fixings were manufactured from bronze and brass respectively. The initial requirement was for a production run of 120, with the potential for installation across multiple wind farms.
