Insulated Busbars manufactured by Total Connections

Where are busbars used?

Busbars are a crucial element in the distribution, connection and management of electrical currents. They are found in just about every industry, from automotive and rail to telecoms, IT and Datacentres. Really, any application that has an electrical element is likely to rely to some extent on busbars. The possible size and configuration of insulated busbars is really only limited by the available space. Do make sure that electrical requirements are always supported though.

Total Connections have the manufacturing capabilities to produce a limitless range of insulated busbars. Generally speaking we produce them from high-quality copper which is usually tin or nickel plated. Then, depending on your needs we can insulate them with a durable heat-shrink or Resicoat powder coating.

You’ll find our busbars and other products throughout the UK’s EV infrastructure, they are a vital component in electric and hybrid vehicles as well as the charge points that deliver their power. Sectors such as medicine, defence and even our own manufacturing industry are relying increasingly on advanced electrical equipment. These are packed with busbars due to their compact design and highly customisable nature.

Pictured is a selection of just some of the busbars we have manufactured. We are able to produce any length required; for scale, the top and bottom busbars pictured here are 600mm in length.

Does my busbar need insulation?

The reason for coating a busbar may be electrical, thermal or environmental. By insulating you can reduce the risk of electric shock, short circuits or voltage leakage. If electromagnetic interference is likely to cause unwanted results, insulation can also shield against this.

As long as the material is rated to appropriate temperatures, it can provide thermal protection by helping to manage the heat generated during current flow. Insulation can also greatly reduce the risk of corrosion and the associated risks corrosion can pose when introduced to an electrical circuit.

Are they suitable for my needs?

Because of the bespoke nature of our busbars, they can be provided exactly as required. Busbars are CNC manufactured and insulated by us before leaving the factory. If you’re running to a tight deadline, we can ship direct to site on a next day service, meaning you can install our products straight out of the box.

The material used for our copper busbars is compliant with the BS EN 13601 standard for copper and copper alloys. Whilst it’s not so easy to apply general standards to our busbar range, our design team have a wealth of knowledge and experience which ensures your busbar will be suitable and safe for their intended application.
