Electrical Contractors Case Study
We were contacted by a market-leading contractor who had been commissioned to install a factory substation. The solid copper busbars could only be installed once the transformers were in situ, which was a time-consuming process and couldn't be planned for in advance. The contractor approached Total Connections to design and manufacture a solution for the substation. The chosen solution was to manufacture flexible busbars, in the form of very large braids (2000sqmm) capable of conducting up to 4000A.
The concept came with a rough sketch from which we produced technical drawings. The braids were composed of 20 layers of 100sqmm flat braid in 2 stacks, terminated with integral lugs with 60 x 60mm hole centres and with M18 clearance. They were 120mm wide, 30mm thick, and were manufactured in a variety of lengths up to 650mm long in tinned copper.
The flexible busbars were quick to manufacture and allowed for immediate installation. The success of this project initiated a productive relationship with the contractor, becoming the first of many problem-solving design and manufacture collaboration projects.
