Defence Case Study
Total Connections was approached to design an earth bar that was to suit a field-deployable data cabinet. The complexity of the specifications providing an interesting challenge - the earth bar was required to service earthing connections both internally and externally.
The equipment inside the cabinet required M6 connections whilst the earthing electrodes outside the cabinet required M8 connections. The earth bar itself was to act as a blanking plate - to blank out a 1U space on the 19" data cabinet. The original prototype was manufactured with a stainless steel blanking plate, but this was changed to ensure that it had a black finish to reduce reflection whilst deployed in a theatre of operations.Given the fact that this was a mobile unit, there was a requirement to be resilient in the face of transportation, so the earth bar was designed to incorporate Heico anti-vibration nuts to reduce loosening. The project highlighted the need for collaboration on sensitive equipment requiring a high degree of resilience in deployment conditions that were uniquely suited to the military.
