Contained Palm Lugs

What exactly is a contained palm lug?

With standard lugs, a natural result of the flattening process is that the palm becomes wider than the barrel. This can pose problems if you don’t have much space to work with. One possible solution therefore is to use a contained palm lug/terminal, which has a narrower palm than a standard lug. Because of this, there is far less variance between the palm with and the barrel diameter. Essentially with a contained palm lug, if your cable fits with a small amount of room to spare then there’s a good chance that the lug will fit too.

Given the in-line form of contained palm lugs, they are incredibly useful when working in a tight space that doesn’t allow for the extra width of a standard connector. You can have several cables terminating in a space not much larger than the width of the cables themselves (allowing of course for the thickness of the material itself).

So, why not just use contained palm lugs for every application?

Well, clearly there are significant benefits to using this type of connector. However, there are some downsides too. With the additional manufacturing processes involved, production costs are inevitably higher for a contained palm lug. If there is no requirement for a space-saving item, you can make a cost-saving without compromising on quality.

Perhaps the only other drawback to using a contained palm lug is that a smaller palm requires a smaller hole. However, you can easily overcome this during the design phase of your installation. Assuming there is a need, a contained palm lug is a neat and effective solution where space constraints would otherwise be prohibitive.
