Tommy is his name – but he doesn’t care what you call him. He’s a punk duck and he hasn’t got any ears anyway.
Tommy was one of very many ducks to take part in this year’s Calne Lions Duck Race. We had a duck racing in last year’s event, but he didn’t feature at the winning line. We felt that he might have been a tad intimidated by the other ducks, so this year, we had a new strategy. A duck who was not scared of anything.
And that is where Tommy comes in. He is a duck with attitude. He sports a wicked Mohican haircut (or feather-cut as it is known in the duck world) and he was not going to let any half-baked fledgling knock him off his stride. As it turns out, he didn’t win the race, but that may be because he was too focused on scaring the beaks off the other ducks. Who knows?
We haven’t seen Tommy since. We don’t even know where he is. He may have taken to the open skies as ducks have a tendency to do. So, next year, we will have to think of a new strategy. Last year we had a very laid-back duck – this year a duck who was perhaps too assertive. Now we need to start training next year’s duck to be a hatched-winner.
Of course, the whole thing was an opportunity for Total Connections to support some wonderful local charities, as well as some national and international good causes. We would like to acknowledge the great work carried out by the Calne Lions – whose annual duck race attracts over 3000 plastic ducks – and we are proud to have played a small part in this year’s event.
And if you do spot a rather belligerent plastic duck intimidating other ducks at a pond near you, feel free to call out his name. He won’t hear you anyway.
