Data Centre Electrical Connections

Data Centre electrical connections – supplied by Total Connections to a number of large data centre operators – has become something of a specialty for the company in 2017. We do not expect 2018 to be any different.

Data centres are big business. Companies like Facebook, Amazon and Google – have all built these enormous warehouses dedicated to servicing the data needs of their customers. Large data centres often use as much electricity as a small town, and due to the nature of the work they do, there is an ultimate requirement for safety and reliability in their operation.

Data centre electrical connections are an essential element in the successful design and operation of data centres. By their very nature, data centres are modular in fashion, allowing for their scalability, and this requires that the components used to connect the banks of servers – often arranged in 19 inch rack cabinets – have to be consistent and reliable.

The need for a constant supply of electricity requires that a certain level of redundancy needs to be designed into the infrastructure. This helps to achieve what is known as an uninterruptible power source system (UPS), with back-up oil and gas generators ready to kick-in should outside power supplies be disrupted. The data centre electrical connections also have to be designed to reduce the heat generated in such centres and they need to work efficiently within the humidity envelope provided by the environmental controls.

Data centre electrical connections – such as those designed and manufactured by Total Connections – play their part in ensuring that the electrical systems work according to the power utilisation efficiency parameters identified for successful data centre infrastructure management (DCIM).
